A Little More Winter-Cowl

With 9 mm needles and super bulky yarn, CO 27 sts.
Border pattern:
Knit seed sts for six rows: k1, p1, repeat to the last st, k1.

Then start with the main pattern:
Wrong side: 5 seed sts (knit over purl, and purl over knit), p6, 5 seed sts, p6, 5 seed sts.
Right side: 5 seed sts, k6, 5 seed sts, k6, 5 seed sts.

Knit nine rows with this pattern, starting and ending with a wrong side row.
On the tenth row, knit a cable row: 5 seed sts, C6F, 5 seed sts, C6F, 5 seed sts.

(C6F = knit a cable pattern with six sts: slip three sts onto cable needle, hold it in front, knit the three next sts, knit the three sts from cable needle)

Repeat these ten rows seven more times.

Then knit the nine first WS and RS rows to «finish» the cable pattern

Finish off with the border pattern for six rows.
BO and add buttons.

I used oblong buttons, and therefore didn't need any button holes. If you want to use large round buttons, make button holes in the third row of the border pattern like this:
k1, p1, k1, p1, k2tog, yo, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1, p1, k2tog, yo, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1, yo, k2tog, p1, k1, p1, k1.

I recommend using buttons that don't need any button holes, then it's much easier to tighten the cowl if it expands.
